New Zealand (Aotearoa)
2001 NZ Personal Travel Journal
New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Located in the South Pacific, it is comprised of two major islands (the North and South). It's the home of fjords, glaciers, rain forests, geysers, and unspoiled beaches. New Zealand only has a population of about 3.8 million people. It was originally settled by the Maori, which are the indigenous people of New Zealand. New Zealand was first sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. Today though, the Maori make up over 14 percent of the population. Their language and culture have a major presence in all parts of New Zealand life. I went to New Zealand for 3 months in May 2001 with a work visa. I went with the intention of working in Auckland. However after being in the city for a week, I grew restless. How could I work in the city for 3 months, when there was so much beautiful country to see around me? So, I decided to backpack. I went and bought a Kiwi Experience bus pass for the next few months, which gave me access to both the north and south islands. It was the best decision I ever made. I met so many people from all over the world, and it was an amazing journey. I was awed by the beauty of the country, and the sincerity of the Kiwis'. Learning about the Maori culture was also incredible: the traditions, the language, and meeting so many wonderful Kiwis. Kiwis' have a reputation for being an adventurous lot so I was very fortunate to take part in many activites in the country: from scuba diving, skydiving, bungee jumping, white water rafting, glacier hiking, kayaking, cave abseiling, and more. For me, this was a trip of a lifetime. New Zealand is a country that I will never forget. I can't wait to go back. Below are some pictures of my journeys through both the north and the south islands.
