Rijksmuseum/Van Gogh Museum

A

The Rijksmuseum is the largest art museum in Holland and is known mainly for housing many fine masterpieces of the 17th century dutch masters. The collection includes pieces from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, and other dutch artists. The museum which opened in 1885 is very beautiful with gothic and renaissance style designs. One of the highlights for me at the Rijksmuseum were the many Rembrandt self-portraits as well as his 'Nightwatch' painting. I didn't expect it to be so large and its truely amazing to see it up close. The Van Gogh museum was also very impressive. Housing over 200 of Van Gogh's original artwork along with even more drawings and prints. Also included on display were hundreds of letters from his brother Theo which gave a lot of insight into Van Gogh's life and mind which I found very interesting. I was very excited to see one of his 4 Sunflower paintings and to learn a lot more about his life and his eventual tragic death.
