Franz Josef Glacier
The Franz Josef Glacier is located in the South Westland Coast of the New Zealand. It falls from 2700 meters to only 300 meters above sea level and is about 13 km long. The smoothness on the cliffs show how the glacier has cut through the rock over the years. This place was amazing. I took the Heli Hike, which consisted of a helicopter flight over three icefalls of the Franz Josef Glacier. We landed high up on the glacier where we put on some crampons, got an ice pic and hiked on top of the glacier for a couple of hours. The views of the glacier and the surrounding mountains were something I will not forget. This was the first time I had ever done any kind of ice climbing, and it was an amazing experience. What the glacier has done to the mountains over the past years is truely amazing. Note, the ice is actually whiter than it appears on the photos. Now if only I would have taken my photo classes before this trip! : ) Click to see more.... |
