Dam Square
Dam Square is Amsterdam's main square, and was created in the 13th century when a dam was built around the river Amstel to prevent flooding of the city. The royal palace is located in the Dam Square along with many restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. Adjacent to the palace is the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky where we had the pleasure of staying. We arrived the week before Queen's day and pre-celebrations had already begun in the square when we arrived. A carnival with ferris wheel along with many rides decorated the square and the front of the royal palace. Unfortunately we left the day before Queen's day, but were told the city becomes one giant party on that day from morning til night with people selling everything on the street from food to drinks to things in their homes. The dutch definitely know how to party. Below are a few pics taken. Click to enlarge... |
