Auckland 
Auckland, also known as the City of Sails is New Zealand's largest city, with a population of about 1.3 million. It's name in Maori is Tamaki Makau Rau or "City of 100 lovers". It earned this name because it was a place desired by all and conquered by many. I had a great time in Auckland when I was there. It was a major hub for me in between places. There are many beautiful places that can easily be reached from Auckland. From the skytower, to a harbor boat trip to one of the nearby islands, to visiting the great museums, to Mt Eden, Waiheke Island, etc - it was very easy to get around. Driving took some adjustment I had to say, esp. on the motor ways and driving on the left side of the road! Overall, I loved being here. I did a lot of shopping and sightseeing, met lots of great people, and had a lot of late night visits to all the internet cafes, so readily available just about everywhere here.
