Anne Frank's House
I took a tour of the Anne Frank house, where the Frank family hid from the Nazis for 26 months during World War II and where Anne wrote her famous diary. Upon entering the museum after standing in line with many other people, you pass through a exhibition about Anne and the others who were hiding with her. As you walk past the bookcase that hid the secret staircase, you can only imagine what it must have been like for 8 people to go into hiding. Anne's room still has the pictures of photos from magazines which she pasted to the walls. The furniture is gone, but you can still feel what it must have been like. With the museum busy as it was, it was difficult to experience the same silence they must have all had to bear day to day. I'm sure on a quiet day, it would be quite eerie. We were able to roam the 2 top floors except for the attic. The end of the tour ends with interviews with other camp survivors, those who knew the Frank family, and pictures and videos of concentration camps which were very disturbing. Anne's famous original diary is on display in a glass case as well as numerous photographs, official documents, letters, postcards, copies of her re-written official diary, books and possessions from the Frank family and the other people in hiding. The end of the tour is a giftshop where you can purchase Anne Frank's diary in numerous languages, among other books written about her life. Overall this was a deeply moving experience.
